Plantclub’s Design team: behind the scenes

In the realm of interior design, incorporating plants involves a multifaceted approach. Designers must consider not only the visual appeal of the greenery but also its ability to flourish within the given environment. This process demands understanding the plants’ needs and the overall design aesthetic. Ultimately, chosen plants should reflect the design vision, meet client expectations, and integrate with architectural elements. Above all, the plants must be suited to the space, ensuring their long-term health and vitality, thereby contributing to an enduring, vibrant design.

Roots of creativity

The Plantclub design team meticulously handles every detail of our office plant design. Our customer-centric approach is realized through the collaboration of three unique and diverse visions bonded by a shared goal. Meet Ailsa, Ceren, and Henrietta – a team that pushes the boundaries of creativity and complexity in biophilic design.

Ailsa

Ailsa, a Scottish talent, brings an uncommon perspective to Plantclub's design team. With a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the University of St Andrews and a Bachelor of Arts in Sculpture and Environmental Art from the renowned Glasgow School of Art, her creative foundations run deep. Ailsa's career path began in Scotland as a visual artist. She then moved to Sweden and Spain to work as an English teacher, eventually settling in Germany, where she worked as a kindergarten teacher. Driven by her artistic spirit, she found her niche at Plantclub, thriving as a designer while enriching her work with the wealth of her diverse experiences. Ailsa's passion for plants extends beyond the workplace, with over 100 flourishing in her apartment, a testament to her love for nature and dedication to incorporating it into her designs.

Ceren

Ceren merges her love for design with a dedication to sustainability, leading the way for eco-conscious practices at Plantclub. With a Bachelor's in architecture from Istanbul, and an M.A. in Resource Efficiency in Architecture and Planning from Hamburg, she transitioned from large-scale urban projects to nature-centric design. Moreover, her recent GRI training equipped her with the skills to report on sustainability, applying the GRI standards in practice. Ceren’s designs strike a balance between visual appeal and ecological stewardship, cultivating a seamless connection between the architectural landscape and the natural world.

Henrietta

Inspired by her upbringing amidst South Australia's rural beauty, Henrietta combines her design expertise with an in-depth understanding of indoor plants. With a Bachelor of Design from the esteemed Whitehouse Institute of Design, specializing in Styling and Creative Direction, Henrietta expertly guides clients in selecting the perfect greenery for their spaces. By merging her rural roots with urban and global inspirations, she crafts innovative solutions that showcase her passion for nature and design. In addition to her role as a design and operations coordinator at Plantclub in Hamburg, Henrietta showcases her talent as a florist at Gestrüpp, demonstrating her commitment to both fields and highlighting her ability to balance multiple creative pursuits.

Design victories

Unveiling some of the most notable projects that have defined our design team's success, we spotlight key achievements.

At the OMR festival, Plantclub and Gestrüpp joined forces to create an exceptional stand for a high-profile client, showcasing their collaborative efforts and commitment to delivering top-notch results. Henrietta's design skills merged her roles at both Plantclub and Gestrüpp, as she elegantly fused plants and florals to create an alluring ambiance. Her work exemplified the success of the collaboration, showcasing her ability to synthesize her dual professional experiences into a unified, impressive result.

Plantclub's participation in the Cradle to Cradle NGO exhibition, "Cycle Instead of Crisis," highlights the company's dedication to sustainable design practices. Driven by this commitment, Ceren, the responsible representative from Plantclub, meticulously curated and arranged repurposed plants for the display. This contribution to the circular economy not only supported the exhibition's focus on environmental responsibility but also emphasized the importance of repurposing resources for a greener future.

Embarking on her first Third Day green wall for one of a Plantclub’s members, Ailsa was excited to put her sculpture skills to use again. Embracing the challenge of learning something new, she transformed a vision of urban greenery into reality. Her determination grew alongside the plants, reaffirming her commitment to harmoniously blending nature and design.

Inspiration unleashed

Delving into our design team's diverse sources of inspiration, we uncover the practical tips they rely on to maintain their creative edge.

Ceren believes inspiration is always waiting to be discovered around the corner. As a curious and dedicated explorer, her sense of style and design stems from her love for travel and architecture, as well as her deep connection to Turkey's landscapes. Ceren's design style brings together Mediterranean minimalism and futuristic functionality, creating a distinctive fusion that genuinely reflects her creative essence.

Ailsa's design vision aims to reshape post-COVID workspaces by moving away from  outdated grid systems of observational management design to solutions that prioritize well-being, comfort, acoustics, and a sense of connection to nature. For a deeper understanding of the importance of integrating natural elements into our built environments, she recommends ‘Design with Nature' by Ian McHarg.

Henrietta's inspiration stems from life's diverse canvas, with her floristic background igniting a passion for nature's vibrant beauty. Collaborating with clients, exchanging ideas with friends, and observing the world fuel her creativity, motivating her to deliver unique, innovative design solutions.

Behind the scenes: A day in the life of our designers

A typical day for our design team involves a mixture of creativity, collaboration, and meticulous planning. Each day can include, but is not limited to:

  • An introductory call with a new client to understand their vision and aspirations for their space.

  • Conducting site visits to assess the area, envision possibilities, and gather essential information.

  • Visiting our plant warehouse to handpick the perfect plants for a design, ensuring they complement the client's vision and contribute to promoting circularity.

  • Creating design mock-ups and install plans, bringing ideas to life while aligning every element with the client's needs.

In the mock-up process, our design team evaluates various factors to create tailored concepts that cater to individual needs. Key considerations include analyzing light allowance, understanding space usage, optimizing visual appeal, and establishing focal points. By addressing these aspects, the team devises custom solutions that transform office spaces, blending practicality, artistic elements, and particular requirements to foster vibrant and inviting atmospheres.
